      Charles Willard Bassett died peacefully in his home on December 5, 2014, in Menomonie, WI at the age of 77.

      Charles is survived by his wife of 48 years, Diane K. Bassett (Manske); his children, Brian (Sarah) Bassett, Michelle Bassett-Shea (Troy); his only granddaughter, Madelyn Shea; nieces, Dena Manske of Sheboygan and Dawn (Joe) Kay of LaCrosse; great-nephews, Quincy and Clayton Kay of La Crosse; his brother, Steven (Margaret) Bassett of Connecticut; half brothers, Ronald (Kathy) Bassett of Indiana, Robert Bassett and Stephen (Sue) Bassett of Nebraska; half sisters, Margaret (Bob) Renner of Colorado and Cecelia Eloise Bassett of Nebraska; along with very special friends, Robert and Eva Henning of Eau Claire and David and Patricia Mayer of Altoona.

      He is preceded in death by his mother, Floretta (Heideman)Bassett Lawrence and his father, Willard Bassett.

      Charles was born on March 17, 1938, in Eau Claire to Floretta and Willard Bassett.

      After attending Altoona High School he enlisted in the US Army in 1955 and retired after 20 years of service with the rank of Sargent First Class. Charles also began his railroading career with the Milwaukee Road in the late 60s and retired from Amtrak in 2000 where he worked as a Conductor.

      Charles and Diane resided in Milwaukee for 32 years where they raised two 2 children. In 1998 Charles and Diane moved to Sheboygan, WI where they lived for 7 years. After the birth of their only grandchild 2005, they have called Menomonie their home.

      Charles was an avid fan of model railroading and was a faithful member of the Episcopal Church. He was a union steward for the United Transportation Union for several years and a member of TREA: The Enlisted Association, the Democratic Party of WI, the ACLU, Milwaukee Road Historical Society, and the West Central Wisconsin Rail Coalition.

      Services are scheduled for Saturday December 13, 2014, at Grace Episcopal Church, Menomonie, WI with visitation from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and the service at 12:30 p.m. and a reception to follow. Rev. Jacalyn Broughton will officiate the ceremony. In lieu of flowers the family suggests sending memorials to Grace Episcopal Church, E4357 451st Ave, Menomonie, WI 54751, Stepping Stones of Dunn County, 1620 Stout Rd, Menomonie, WI 5475 or Dunn County Human Society, 302 Brickyard Rd, Menomonie, WI 54751.
