Janis Bassett Obituary

Schoharie (Schoharie County): Janis A. Bassett, 80, of Caroga Lake NY and Englewood Florida, formerly of Schoharie NY passed away peacefully on October 17, 2018 in Florida.
Jan was born April 18,1938 in Johnsburgh NY. She graduated from Glens Falls High School in 1956, Syracuse University in 1960 and later, Albany Teacher College. She married her beloved husband Peter F. Bassett on June 29, 1963 who passed away October 15, 2013. Together they raised three daughters. She touched many lives as a teacher in Gloversville NY, Hudson Falls NY and Cobleskill NY.
Jan?s love of helping others was shown in many ways especially during the Schoharie flood through Loaves and Fishes. She was very creative and loved to sew and was an active and beloved member of the Sunshine quilt guild of Englewood Florida.
She is survived by her three daughters Cheryl ( Mark) LaPointe of Hampton NY, Lisa ( Jon) Derochie of Rotonda West Florida and Wendy ( Robert) Lunt of New Paltz NY, 7 grandchildren and 7 great- grand children that were the loves of her life.
A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, October 30 from 4-7 PM at the Langan Funeral Home 327 Main Street, Schoharie NY. In memory of Janis memorial contributions may be made to the Mote Marine Aquarium in Sarasota Florida.

Miss Janis A. Wells, 78 Prospect Avenue, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Llewellyn S. Wells of Glens Falls, became the bride of Army 1st Lt. Peer F. Bassett of Camp Gordon, Ga., son of Mr. and Mrs. Merwyn Bassett of 276 East Fulton Street, at 1 Saturday afternoon at Trinity Episcopal Church.
The double ring ceremony, in a setting of white chrysanthemums and gladioli, was performed by Rev. Garry A. Cooper, rector, Mrs. Dorothy Sawyer, organist, played selections.
Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a silk organza gown with Alencon lace over taffeta, having a full skirt ending in a chapel train. Her 3-tiered Swiss illusion veil was attached to a queen?s crown trimmed with seed pearls and blossoms, and she carried a white prayer book with white orchids and rosebuds.
Miss Elizabeth A. Hillman of Glens Falls was maid of honor. She wore a ballerina length orchid silk organza gown with matching cap and veil. She carried a cascade bouquet of roses and daisies.
Bridesmaids were Miss Ann M. Ripton of Schenectady, and Miss Loretta A. Campbell. Junior bridesmaids were Miss Marjorie L. Wells of Fort Edward RD, niece of the bride, and Miss Mary B. Sperry, Glens Falls, cousin of the bridegroom. They carried baskets of roses and daisies.
The bridal attendants were identically attired in pink aqua maize and blue gowns with matching accessories.
David H. Sperry of Lake George RD, cousin of the bridegroom, was best man. Ushers were Edison F. Wells, Glens Falls, brother of the bride, and Joseph C. Riggio, Elizabeth, N.J.
The bride?s mother wore a floral print dress, with yellow rose petal hat, white accessories and a white orchid corsage. The bridegroom?s mother wore a pink silk organza dress with tiered skirt, flowered pink hat, and matching accessories.
A reception was held at 2 Saturday afternoon at Concordia Park, with about 130 persons attending.
The bride is a member of the faculty at Gloversville High School. She is a graduate of Glens Falls High School, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Syracuse University, and a Master of Arts degree from Albany State Teachers College. She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority at Syracuse.
Bassett is serving with the military police at the Army Training Center at Gordon, Ga. He is a graduate of Gloversville High School, received a Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University, and a Master of Arts degree from Albany State Teachers College. He was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity at Boson.
The couple will travel in the southern states for their wedding trip. For the trip, Mrs. Bassett chose a gray linen suit, with white accessories and a white orchid corsage.
Members of the bridal party were presented gifts at a party Friday night at the camp of the bridegroom?s parents at East Caroga Lake after a rehearsal.
Persons attending the ceremony were from Glens Falls, Saratoga Springs, Lake George, Johnston, Schenectady, Johnsburg, and New Jersey.
