Barbara Bass Ward of McComb, Mississippi
April 4, 1935 ? October 12, 2020
Barbara Ann Bass Ward passed from this life into the arms of her Heavenly Father on October 12, 2020. Barbara was born April 4, 1935 in McComb, Mississippi as the sixth child of eight children to Velma Perry Catt and Gale Alonzo Bass. Barbara was proud of her deep roots in East McComb and had many lifelong friends and fond memories.
Barbara met her future husband Bobby Gene Ward at the old skating rink above J C Penney when it was in Downtown McComb. It was a relationship that bound them together through 67 years of marriage, until Bobby?s death in 2017.
Barbara and Bobby lived in various places before making McComb their home. She supported her husband and his career, moving to Maryland, Texas, and Louisiana before they settled back in Pike County in 1967 with their four children.
Barbara and Bobby owned 2 businesses in the McComb area including Ward?s Cleaners and later Ward?s Carpet and Decorating. Additionally, Barbara worked several years in various retail and hospitality businesses in McComb including Shainberg ?s, Morgan and Lindsey?s, Stage, Ramada Inn, and Holiday Inn.
For most of their married life, Barbara and Bobby were members of McComb First Church of the Nazarene. Barbara was active in choir and taught 3-year-old Sunday School and always supported the programs the church offered for their children and family. Later in life, Barbara and Bobby moved their membership to New Heights (East McComb) Baptist Church and were active in all facets of senior adult ministry with their new church family.
Barbara longed to join her family in heaven, as she was the last surviving sibling. Barbara loved her brothers, sisters, and in-laws who predeceased her including Martin Bass (Mary Louise), Hollis Bass (Sara), Vonceil Errington (Mack), Dorothy ?Dot? Bean (Charlie), Thomas ?Tommy? Bass (Jean), Sue Smith (Jack), and infant sister Patsy Gail Bass.
Barbara is survived by her children Bobby Ward (Kathryn), Ottis Ward (Michele), Don Ward (Angela), and Lisa Hatch (Tim). Her grandchildren include Holly Croteau (Chris), Mitchell Ward, Mindy Boyd (Blake), Nicholas Ward, Jessica Ward, Cannon Ward (Mallory), Madeline Saxton (Randall), Charlton Ward, K-Lynn Kent (Trevor), Bailey Hatch, Aaron Hatch, Daniel Smith, and Joshua Nettles. Barbara is also survived by a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and one of her closest friends and traveling companion, Patsy Hightower.
Known for her sense of humor, funny stories, and loyal friendship, Barbara will be missed by those who counted on her to provide a smile or light-hearted story. Her faith in God has been the foundation for her life. She was a fierce prayer warrior and her grandchildren often said she had a direct line to God.
Pall Bearers will be her grandsons Charlton Ward, Blake Boyd, Chris Croteau, Randall Saxton, Aaron Hatch, and Trevor Kent. Honorary pallbearers will be Cannon Ward, Mitch Ward, Nick Ward, Daniel Smith, Joshua Nettles, and Tommy Chunn.
The family would like to thank the staff of Compassus and Camellia Estates for the care provided the past several weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blair E Batson?s Children?s Hospital in honor of Cash Ward, her great grandson who is battling leukemia.
Visitation will be at New Heights Baptist Church in Summit on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, from 5:00 ? 7:00 pm and again at 10:00 am on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 with service at 11:00 am. Bro. Rick Kennedy and Dr. David Millican will officiate the services with Sharkey Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery.
