Thomas R. Bass
ROCK HALL - Thomas R. Bass, 81, of Rock Hall, died July 3, 2013 at home.
Tom was born May 14, 1932 in McComb, Miss., son of the late Gale Alonza and Velma Catt Bass. He was raised in M i s s i s s i p p i and, at the age of 17, enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served his country until 1972, including more than 12 years of overseas duty and obtaining the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4. He specialized in missiles and missile deployment. He was released by the Reserves in 1980.
He made Rock Hall his home in 1972, after finding the town while being stationed at the Nike Missile Base in Tolchester. From 1972 to 1978, he worked as a control switch operator in Chestertown and, from 1993 to 2012, he was the town manager and zoning administrator for the Town of Galena. He also worked part time for the Town of Betterton.
Mr. Bass was an active member of Wesley Chapel Church, where he had been the Sunday school superintendent and a teacher. He was active with Gideons International and Rock Hall Seniors, serving as past president for both. He enjoyed playing the guitar, singing, country music and golf.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Caleb Jason Ellis.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Jean Bass; four daughters, Brenda Bass (Charlie Heinefield), Barbara Bass (Cliff Coleman), Betty Holota and Brette Tucker (Bobby) of Rock Hall; three sisters, Barbara Ward of Summit, Miss., Dorothy Dean Beam of McComb, and Sue Smith of Crystal Springs, Miss.; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held July 10 in Wesley Chapel Church, Rock Hall.
