Lumberton Woman Leaves 56 Grandchildren

LUMBERTON, Miss. ? Mrs. Mary Wilkes Bass, widow of Isaac Esau Bass, died at her home Monday at 3:30 p.m. She was 103.
Mrs. Bass was born near Prentiss, Miss., May 21, 1855. She was married Jan. 8, 1874, in Prentiss, where she and her husband lived until they moved to Lumberton in 1889. Mr. Bass began the Bass Pecan Nursey here at that time.
She was a member of the First Baptist church.
For the past 20 years her birthday had been a special event around the entire area. Since her 100th birthday, she had been unable to participate in family gatherings.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. at Bounds funeral home here. Burial will be in Lumberton cemetery.
Survivors include three sons, Dr. Charles C. Bass of New Orleans, retired dean of the Tulane university medical school; Rear Adm. Ivan E. Bass of Washington, D.C.; I. H. Bass of Lumberton; Dr. Cora Bass Pigford and Mrs. H.W. Greet, both of Lumberton; 14 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Pecan Magnate?s Widow, 103, Dies
Lumberton, Miss. (AP) ? Mrs. Mary Eliza Bass, 103, widow of pecan magnate I.E. Bass, died Monday after a long illness.
A native of Marion County, she and her husband moved to Lumberton in 1900 when Bass established his pecan business.
Survivors include three sons, Dr. C.C. Bass of New Orleans, Adm. I.E> Bass of Washington, and I.H. Bass of Lumberton; two daughters, Mrs. A.A. Pigford and Mrs. W.M. Greer, both of Lumberton; 14 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
