Ralph W. Bassett
Funeral for Ralph W. Bassett, who died Sunday in a Portland hospital, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Church.
Mr. Bassett was born in Tacoma, Wash., April 16, 1911. After graduation from the University of Washington, he began a teaching career in Quinalt. He received his Master of Arts degree from Reed College.
In Portland, his first teaching assignment was at Roosevelt High School. He later served for many years as supervisor of foreign languages for Portland Public School. He retired in 1976.
Mr. Bassett received several honors for his work in curriculum development and instruction in foreign languages. In 1970, the government of France awarded him the Palmes Academiques in Paris for his efforts to improve the teaching of the French language in United States public schools. He also served as a consultant to the French government in programs to improve the foreign language curriculum in the schools of France.
Mr. Bassett was a veteran of service in the Army in World War II in Europe. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and had served as parish librarian. He was also treasurer of Oregon Citizens for the Courts until recently.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Louis J. Dorst, Laguna Hills, Calif.
The family suggests remembrances be contributions to the Hospice Team of the Visiting Nurses Association of Portland.
