      William L. Bass

Editor Herald.-The family of William L. Bass gathered at the residence of his oldest son, Robert Bass, of Monroe township, for the purpose of celebrating the old gentleman?s 81st birthday, about sixty persons being present. Those present not of the family were Miss Harriet Atwood, Miss Fannie McCanna, Mr. Eugene White and family and Mrs. James Mateer and family. After dinner was spread the children all gathered in the sitting room, and gave the old folks some nice presents, Elijah Busby, a son-in-law making the presentation speech; after which all repaired to the dining room and did justice to turkeys, pies, cakes and other good things too numerous to mention.
Father Bass emigrated from Indiana to Van Buren county, in this State, in 1844, then afterwards settled in Union township, Mahaska county, in 1849. ? When he came to this county he had a family of nine children: it now numbers sixty-seven, including sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Father and Mother Bass were married July 3, 1821 making sixty years of wedded life passed together by this venerable couple. Mother Bass will be 80 years old on the 1st day of April, 1882.

BASS ? William L. Bass died at the residence of his son Robert, in Monroe township, March 18. His funeral was preached by Rev. Stephen miller, of the German Baptist church, of which church he had been a member for over twenty years. Mr. Bass was born in Barren county, Ky, in 1802 He came to Indiana with his father in 1820, and in 1823 returned to Kentucky, and married Margaret Roberts, in which relation they lived for over sixty years, until death separated them about one year ago, when Mrs. Bass was called away. They moved from Indiana to Iowa in 1843, when it was yet a territory, and remained in Van Buren county until 1843, when they came to Mahaska and settled in Union township, near which place they lived until about five years ago, when they gave up house-keeping and lived with their children. They were the parents of eleven children, who all survive them, together with forty-three grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Thus another has gone; a Christian, a good citizen, and a kind and indulgent father. It was hard to give him up. But in those sad hours of the night the death messenger came slowly and silently, from whose summons none escape. G.W. France.
