Sudden Death of an Aged Lady
Mrs. Maultsey Bass, wife of Mr. Lewis G. Bass, died at the residence of her husband, near Magnolia, Duplin county, on Monday morning, the 28th ult. She arose in the morning at the usual hour and ate a hearty breakfast, in seemingly excellent health and spirits. After breakfast she went into her sitting-room where she conversed with her husband and a visitor for some time, with no appearance of ill-health. Mr. Bass and the visitor after awhile went out, and in a short time Mrs. Putnam, Mrs. Bass? widowed daughter, went into the room and found her frothing at the mouth and apparently in a dying condition. She was placed upon a bed and a physician sent for, who was soon in attendance and administered such remedies as the occasion demanded; but with no beneficial results. She died before noon the same day. She was 70 years of age and had been a consistent member of the Baptist Church for about 40 years.
