In Memory of Catherine Bassett

Catherine Gray Bassett passed away peacefully on February 13, 2013. She was 87 years old. Born at home in Nanuet, New York on April 30, 1925 to Margaret and James Gray she graduated Spring Valley High School and then attended Bob Jones University. Upon completion of schooling she took a position as a secretary at Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River, NY. Shortly thereafter she became the private secretary to the head of research and in 1945 it was Catherine who documented the official report provided to the US Federal Government laying out the uses and benefits of Dr. Alexander Flemming's discovery of Penicillin. Over time she assisted in documenting and bringing forward many other similar discoveries. A long time resident of New City, she and her high school sweetheart Edison Bassett married in 1948 after his completion of service in the US Navy. After marrying they built a successful business in New City known as Bassett Flowers. As a long term member of Grace Baptist Church she was a devoted member of the choir, women's fellowship group and pioneer girls.
A loving wife and mother she is predeceased by her husband of 62 years Edison (2010) and is survived by her daughter Cathy Elliott and son in law Ernest Elliott of Boston Ma., and her daughter Peggy Bassett of New City.
Family will receive visitors on Tuesday February 19th at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, New City from 11am-2pm followed by burial at Germonds Cemetery, New City. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army, 440 West Nyack Road, West Nyack, New York 10994.
