Edison M. Bassett
Edison "Ed" Bassett passed away on March 10, 2010 surrounded by love. He was 87. Ed was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1922 to Edison and Nellie Bassett. When he was 3 yrs old his family moved to New City where he spent the remainder of his life. He graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1939 and went to work as a welder in the Kingston, NY shipyard. He served in WWII, enlisting in the Navy Air Corps in 1943 as a welder and machinist, working on Naval Aircrafts. Returning home he married, began a retail flower business and a family. In 1958 the first Bassett Flowers Shop opened on North Main Street across from the Rockland County Court House. By 1962 the business had grown and moved to where it now stands on South Main Street. Ed was a member of the Rotary Club, New City Businessman's Association, and the Rockland Retail Florist Association. In 1991 he retired from the flower business. A devoted member of Grace Baptist Church in Nanuet since his childhood. Ed worked tirelessly serving as a trustee, Deacon and member of the decorating committee. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Catherine, his daughter Cathy Elliott, son-in-law Ernest Elliott of Bolton, MA, daughter Peggy Lynne of New City, and many other family and friends. Family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9PM at Higgins Funeral Home, New City, NY. A Service will be held on Monday 11AM with burial at Germonds Cemetery, New City, NY.
