The Jones Valley Times, Elyton, Alabama, August 31, 1854
Died
Of Consumption, at his residence in Jefferson County, Ala, August 19, 1854, Andrew Bass, Esq., in the 51st year of his age, after having suffered for a great while.
The subject of this notice was born in Anson county, N.C. July 4, 1804, and came to Alabama with his father while a young man. A few years thereafter he became united to Miss Jane Montgomery by marriage, with whom he lived in great harmony until his death. They by their industry and economy have raised a large and respectable family; he, although a child of affliction for many years, was so industrious and economical that he always had a sufficiency of the good things of this life; he was troubled with the disease of which he died, for about 30 years, but it is believed no one very endured long protracted affliction with more patience and fortitude, nor maintained more equanimity of mind, or cheerfulness of spirit. It was the privilege of the writer to visit him several times during his long confinement, and we always found him calm, quiet and cheerful, ready to converse on any subject, and particularly that of his affliction, and prospects of happiness beyond the grave. He remarked at one time, ?I think of but little else but death,?, said he, ?I see my way clear sometimes I have some doubts.? But from all his conversation we are satisfied that his last end was that of the ?good man,? peace. It is to be regretted, however, that he never attached himself to any church, for reasons to us unknown, but he had the confidence of all who know him ? he was one of the best kind of citizens, it is said he never was known to have a difficulty with any one during life. But his earthly career is done, he closed his eyes in death on last Saturday, without a struggle or a groan, and on Sunday his numerous friends and relations assembled and committed hi mortal remains to the grave, where it will sleep til the trumpet of God shall wake it.
Thus lived and thus died one of our best neighbors, he leaves a wife, seven sons and two daughters, besides numerous relatives and friends to mourn his loss; but they mourn not as those who have no hope, but they are satisfied that their loss is his gain. O may his examples ever rest upon his acquaintances and friends, and the blessings of God rest upon the bereaved family ? aid and protect his bereaved wife in the discharge of her duty as a parent to her children. W.
