Verna Lundy Bass
Live Oak - Verna Lundy Bass died Thursday at her son's home. She was 88. She was born in Milton and moved to Live Oak in the late 1930s. She taught in Suwannee County for 36 years and was Florida's first elected female school superintendent. She was Suwannee County's superintendent from 1976 to 1981. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Florida Retired Teachers Association and First Baptist Church of Live Oak. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Dr. Clyde Bass. Survivors include sons Andrew C. Bass and B. Lundy Bass, both of Live Oak; daughters Elizabeth Bolton of Gainesville and Suzanne Bass of Jacksonville; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brothers John H. Lundy of Mims and Herbert V. Lundy of Pensacola Beach.

Verna Lundy Bass
Verna Lundy Bass died Thursday, November 14, 2002 in Live Oak, Florida at the home of her son, Lundy Bass. She was 88. Verna was the widow of Dr. Clyde Bass, her husband of 64 years. She was born on November 7, 1914 in Milton, Florida daughter of Elijah and Willa Lundy. She moved to Live Oak, Suwannee County, Florida in the late 30s with her husband, Clyde, a native of Suwannee County. Verna was a lifelong educator devoting her entire career to teaching elementary and junior high students in the public schools of Suwannee County, where she taught for 36 years. Her teaching career began in 1940 in the rural community of Houston just outside Live Oak. In 1942 she began teaching in Live Oak where she continued teaching until her retirement on June 9, 1976. She ran for and was elected Superintendent of Schools in Suwannee County in 1976 to become the first elected female superintendent of schools in the State of Florida. She served one term retiring for the second time on January 5, 1981. She was unflagging in her dedication and commitment to quality education for the students of Suwannee County. She was a spirited leader in the walkout of public school teachers, in 1967, protesting the legislative funding cuts for schools during the administration of Claude Kirk, Governor. She was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a teachers association, Florida Retired Teachers Association of Suwannee and Lafayette and The First Baptist Church of Live Oak. She attended the Florida State College for Women in 1934 and 1935 and completed requirements for her undergraduate degree in education from the University of Florida in 1951. Survivors include sons: Dr. Andrew C. Bass and B. Lundy Bass of Live Oak; daughters: Dr. Elizabeth Bolton of Gainesville and Suzanne Bass of Jacksonville. In addition to her passion for quality public education, Verna enjoyed growing and grafting camellias, sewing and bridge. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 17, at The First Baptist Church, Live Oak, Florida.
