Searcy Bassett Jr.
Searcy Bassett, Jr., was born in Sealy, Texas, September 16, 1921, the seventh child of Searcy and Gertrude Palmer Bassett. He attended schools in Sealy and later moved to Houston and continued his education at Jack Yates High School. Searcy was baptized at East Bethel Baptist Church in Houston, Texas and later became a faithful member of Augustana Lutheran Church, where he remained until his demise, May 14, 2010. In 1952, he married Lavonia Norvell Pope. To this union, their one and only daughter, Ava was born. Searcy and Lavonia nurtured and cultivated a strong family unit of which he was extremely proud. The couple loved to travel. They set sail to the Carribean, as well as enjoyed trips to England, Mexico, Canada, Hawaii and numerous other locations within the U.S. His life's enjoyment was being supportive of Lavonia, Ava, and his entire family. Searcy served his country in the United States Air Force from September 2, 1943 until he was honorably discharged on April 8, 1946. He was employed by the United States Postal Service for approximately 30 years, retiring in 1984. Junior, as he was affectionately called, was a culinary expert and generously shared his talents with family and friends. Searcy was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Lucille and Esther; and brothers, Pearcy, Robert and Sam. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lavonia, daughter, Ava and son-in-law; Kevin Mack, sister, Alvina Falls, nieces Elizabeth, Lydia, Cheryl, Carmen, Sylvia, nephews; Tony, Robert and Bryant; one aunt-in-law; Ruth Drake, and numerous other relatives and friends. There will be a memorial service held in his honor on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Augustana Lutheran Church, 2009 Wheeler Avenue, Houston, Texas 77004, Pastor Walter Little, officiant, Interment: Private.
