      Jackson - John Morgan Bass III, 93, died November 22, 2017 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Visitation is Thursday, November 30 at 10:00 a.m. in Oak Ridge Hall at St. James' Episcopal Church, with the funeral service following at 12:00 noon.

      John was born July 11, 1924 in Hazlehurst, Mississippi to the late John Morgan Bass Jr. and Kate Bridges Bass. He spent his formative years in Hazlehurst, and graduated from high school in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1942. After completing his freshman year at Louisiana State University, he entered the U.S.Army in June 1943. He served in WWII in the European theater from 1944 to 1946, where he was commissioned and posted to the 63rd, 94th, and 78th infantry divisions, as well as the 15th army headquarters.

      After the war he returned to LSU, where he met his future wife, Ouida Elizabeth Woody, and graduated in 1949 with a degree in civil engineering. In 1950, he was recalled to active duty in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a long-term resident of Jackson, where he was engaged in private practice as a consulting engineer in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee for over 50 years, providing planning, design, and construction of utility systems for over 30 Mississippi municipalities and counties. He was a member of the North Jackson Kiwanis Club and numerous professional engineering societies, and served tirelessly with the Jackson Ballet and Mississippi Opera. He worked many years promoting and organizing competitive swimming in Jackson.

      Along with his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ouida Woody Bass, and sisters Evelyn Bass Patrick and Rosemary Bass Hall. He is survived by daughters Ouida Holland (James) of Jackson, Joanna Roberts (Joe) of Jackson, and Adrienne Hillyer (Bruce) of Memphis, Tennessee; grandchildren Robert Holland, David Holland, John Roberts, Jason Roberts, Jennifer Roberts Bonds (Bo), Rainey Hillyer Mitchell (Kevin), Barry Hillyer (Caroline), and Sam Hillyer; and 2 great-grandsons.

      Memorials can be made to local animal shelters, the LSU Military Museum www.lsufoundation.org, in memory of John M. Bass or a charity of choice.
