Richard J. Bassett
Richard J. Bassett, 91, of Chittenango, passed away Friday at Stonehedge Nursing Home in Chittenango. Dick was born December 19, 1919, in Auburn, to Helen and Dudley Bassett. He grew up in Ogdensburg, graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy and attended Paul Smith's College. Dick had been a resident of Chittenango since 1954. He proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army, 309th Bomb Squadron in Europe and the U.S. Border Patrol in California. Dick retired from Western Electric, Syracuse, after more than 30 years of service. He loved children, fishing, SU football and summers on the St. Lawrence River and will be remembered for his unique personality and humor. The family wishes to thank the staff at Stonehedge Nursing Home for the care they gave. Dick is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Nancy; his sister Mary Golden of Chico, CA; sons, Andrew Bassett of Alexandria, VA, David Bassett of Alexandria Bay, NY, and Richard (Ruth) Bassett of Manlius, NY; grandchildren, Ryan and Haley Bassett of Manlius; and 11 nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Patrick's Church, Chittenango. Burial with military honors will follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Chittenango. Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at G.F. Zimmer Funeral Home, 702 Legion Drive, Chittenango.
