James Morris Shoemaker Bassett
James Bassett, 53, of New Berlin, New York, died on December 8, 2002, of an apparent heart attack. He was born in Cold Spring, New York on February 27, 1949, to Mr. and Mrs. George P. Bassett, then of Garrison, New York, and later of New Berlin.
He attended Garrison Union Free School and James I. O'Neill High School in Highland Falls, New York and moved with his parents and sister to New Berlin in June 1969. For much of the next thirty-three years he was employed by a number of New Berlin residents, for whom he mowed lawns, raked leaves, shoveled snow, and provided similar services.
In his spare time he enjoyed working on motorcycles, riding ATV four wheelers, playing video games, attending motocross events, and cheering passionately for the New York Yankees despite his well-known and nearly total opposition to the actions of George Steinbrenner, principal owner of the team. Mr. Bassett, known as Jim or Jimbo, also enjoyed participating in sports, particularly tennis and softball, and played on a softball team in town for some years until it disbanded. Almost completely ambidextrous, he could catch and throw, as well as swing a bat or a tennis racket, from either side.
Mr. Bassett is survived by his sister, Phebe Lord Bassett, of New Berlin; by his brother, George Pomeroy Bassett, his sister-in-law, Nancy Hamill Wilson, and his niece, Eliza Barr Bassett-Wilson, all of Ewing, New Jersey; and by four cousins: Nancy Bassett Smith of West Newton, Massachusetts; Susan Bassett of Flagstaff, Arizona; David Townsend of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and Polly Townsend of Garrison, New York, as well as her husband, Perry Pitt and their sons, Jonathan and Thomas Townsend-Pitt.
A memorial gathering will be held in the parish hall of St. Andrew's Church, New Berlin, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 28. All are welcome.
