Mary Bassett
Mary J. Bassett, 94, of Portage, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2017, at Heritage House in Portage.
Mary was born on Feb. 26, 1923, the only child born to Ben and Erna (Schmidtbauer) Palmer. On Sept. 22, 1944, she married C. Lee Bassett, the love of her life she met at UW Madison. They wed during his World War II service as lieutenant navigator in the Navy.
Mary worked as a legal secretary and later helped her mother Erna operate the family business Loreli Fashions for many years until 1983 when she and Lee retired to Florida until 2007 when they returned to Portage to be closer to family.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Pam (Doug) Williams; her granddaughters, Rachel Schaaf and Brianne Williams; great-grandchildren, Elijah Colson, Ben and Kaylee Schaaf
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lee, in 2007 and son, Lee "Mike" Bassett in 2011.
A private family memorial service is being held for Mary. We all feel so blessed to have had one of the best moms, grandma and great-grandma.
Memorials may be made in Mary's name to St. Mary's Catholic Church and school, Agrace Hospice or the charity of your choice.
