Clara L. Bassett, 89
PETERSHAM - Clara L. (Smith) Bassett, 89, of Hospital Road, Gardner, formerly of Petersham and Barre, died yesterday at Wachusett Manor Nursing Home, Gardner, after an illness. Her husband, Leslie W. Bassett, died in 1962. She leaves three daughters, Alice P. Gordon of Orange, Phyllis F. Ryngiewicz of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Marjorie R. Davis of Palmer, Alaska; a niece, Rosemary Hayes of Barre, whom she raised, and a foster daughter, Helen Perkins of Warwick, R.I.; a stepson, Ernest Bassett; a stepdaughter, Louella Ellsworth, both of Petersham; a brother, John Smith of Mason, Mich.; a sister, Ruth White of Framington; 20 grandchildren, and 37 great-grandchildren. She was born in Boston, daughter of Walter and Mary (Calhoun) Smith, and lived most of her life here, eight years in Barre and two years in Gardner. Mrs. Bassett was a member of the Orthodox Congregational Church, and a 50-year member of the Petersham Grange. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Pillsbury Funeral Home, 96 South Barre Road, Barre. Burial will be in East Cemetery. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home.
