BRANDON - Bruce E. Whittemore, 56, of Brandon, passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018, at his developmental care home, operated by Josh and Stacey Mohan and their children Savanah, Caleb and Aubree.
He was placed there in April 2017 and had become so loved. Josh and Stacey have been so caring, loving and knowledgeable in taking care of Bruce with his medical needs. We have been blessed by this family and their love and are so very thankful for their devotion and love to keep Bruce until his passing. Nobody knew how ill he was when he was placed there and they certainly took on more than anyone realized.
Bruce is the son of Harold and Geraldine (Bassett) Whittemore (Mountain View Nursing Home), of Rutland. He was born March 13, 1961, in Proctor. He is survived by his sister, Rebecca and her husband, Thomas Arsenault, of Pittsford; a stepbrother, Richard and his wife, Linda "Tootie," of Warner Robin, GA; a stepbrother, Roy Wilkinson, of Rutland; a niece, Melissa (Whittemore) Ellis and her husband, Gary, in TN, and an Aunt Muriel Leonard, of Rutland, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father in 1987; a stepbrother, Harold Whittemore Jr.; and two stepsisters Alice (Wilkinson) Mann and her husband, Roland, and Betty May (Whittemore) Coburn and her husband, Gerald.
He resided in Brandon Training School from 1966 until 1991 when the school closed. For over 25 years, he lived with Jay Ransom and his family until Jay had to retire. The Ransom family was Bruce's second family and we are thankful for the care over the many years that they provided.
Bruce has always been happy, ready with a smile and had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved ro play "tricks" on people around him, especially his sister, Becky, when they were together. He's always been a very loving member of his family; his mother and sister Rebecca shared guardianship to make sure that his needs were always met. He loved to play with marbles and especially loved the "Cat Eye" marbles. He loved to color and carry a briefcase to keep his important items in. He was very sentimental and patriotic; when hearing the National Anthem or "O' Holy Night," he would tear up. He was very energetic and kept everyone busy until his muscular disease took over his body and he had to be placed in a wheelchair.
He was under the care and supervision of Specialized Community Care of Middlebury since his release from Brandon Training School. Special thanks to Ray Hathaway, Greg Frederick, Scott Hill, Theresa Kimball and everyone else from SCC who had a part in Bruce's care.
Most recently, Bruce had been under the care of BAYADA/VNA and we thank them for such wonderful care and support given to not only Bruce, but the Mohans and his sister, Rebecca.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, at the Aldous Funeral Home. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.
Burial will be at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery in Killington.
