Martha Louise Bassett
Martha Louise Bassett, 96 of Northwood, died Saturday, October 25, 2008, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.
A funeral service for Martha will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at the First Lutheran Church, 309 North 9th Street, Northwood, with Reverend Daniel R. Hart officiating. Burial will be in the South Shell Rock Cemetery in Northwood. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Monday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the church. Martha Louise Bassett was born on October 24, 1912, in Elkton, South Dakota, the daughter of Oscar and Kathryn (Wolff) Von Hagen. Martha grew up in the Myrtle, Minn. area and attended Freeborn County School. As a young girl, Martha helped her parents on the family farm, and throughout her life she was engaged for many years in cleaning of numerous homes and offices in the area, working at Miller’s Green House in Northwood, and also worked at Fallgatters Grocery Store in Northwood.
She was united in marriage to Ted Floyd Bassett on November 24, 1935, at the German Lutheran Church Parsonage in Northwood.
Martha enjoyed baking, and her specialty was her apple pies and Christmas Cookies. She also enjoyed crafts and sewing, and had won many blue ribbons at the Worth County Fair as recently as 2008. Martha never missed an opportunity to go dancing, and also enjoyed visiting with her friends and family especially her children and grandchildren.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Martha Circle, taught Sunday School for 16 years at the church, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion ladies auxiliary.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children; Teddy (Joyce) Bassett of Cary, NC, and Shirley (Don) Petersen of Mason City, four grandchildren; Lori (Chris) Boyd of Raleigh, N.C., Cindy (Cary) Anderson of Bala-Cynwyd, PA, Barbara (Mike) Bailey of Altoona, and Jeff (Denise) Bassett of Scottsdale, AZ, eight great-grandchildren; Chay Anderson of Bala-Cynwyd, PA, Troy and Shelby Bunch, Amber and Hannah Bailey, all of Altoona, Amanda Bassett of Scottsdale, AZ, and Reagan and McKenna Boyd of Raleigh, NC, four step-grandchildren, and three step-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews and other extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ted, a sister, Myrle Hove, and two brothers, Vern “Bud” Von Hagen, and Oliver Von Hagen.
