Bassett Appointed To College Post
The appointment of William J. Bassett as Coordinator of College Relations in the Development Office of Mercy College was announced today by Dr. Donald Grunewald, president of the Dobbs Ferry-based institution.
A veteran Westchester County newsman, Mr. Bassett joins the college staff after having taken early retirement from executive positions with the Westchester Rockland Newspapers. At the time of his June 1 retirement, he was general manager of both The Daily Item, Port Chester and the Daily Times, Mamaroneck, serving as editor of the latter as well.
A native and resident of Rye, Mr. Bassett holds a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Missouri. He joined the Westchester group of newspapers as a reporter upon graduation and has served in all editorial capacities. He has been variously editor of The Daily Item and for 10 years assistant editorial director of the group of nine daily newspapers. In that capacity, he was responsible for news and editorials, policies, planning and development, news production, editorials staff direction and coordination of local and county news coverage. He was widely engaged in the ??? service programs of both the group and its individual newspapers.
Mr. Bassett is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, was active in the New York State Society of Newspaper Editors and of the Associated Press Managing Editors Association. He also was a member of the Sirlurians, an organization of newsmen active in the New York Metropolitan area for 25 years or more.
He is a member of the executive board of United Cerebral Palsy of Westchester and is a former member of the executive board of The Westchester County Red Cross Chapter.
A volunteer fireman, he served for 15 years on the Board of Wardens of the Rye City Fire Department and holds the Valor Medal of the City of Rye for a fire rescue. He was a founder of the Rye Historical Society and the original Rye Teen-Age Center. He has been affiliated with the Lions and Kiwanis clubs; Cub, Boy and Explorer Scout programs from local to district levels, a Junior Achievement advisor and participant n United Fund, Cancer Society and march of Dimes solicitations.

William J. Bassett Jr.
William J. Bassett, Jr. of Rye died on February 5, 2004 in Clearwater, FL. He was 87. Mr. Bassett was employed by Gannett Suburban Newspapers starting in 1939 as a reporter for the Daily Item and working his way up to Managing Editor for the Daily Item and the Daily Times in Mamoroneck. He was with the company for 32 years before retiring in the early 70's. He was a volunteer warden with the Rye Fire Department in Rye at the Milton Point Fire House. Mr. Bassett was born September 20, 1916 in Port Chester, NY to William Sr., and Mary E. Kirby Bassett. He was educated in Rye and graduated from Rye High School of Journalism, Jefferson City, MO in 1939. On January 25, 1942 he married Alice Gardiner. Mr. Bassett lived in Largo, FL for the past 24 years. Before that he was a lifelong Rye resident. He is survived by three sons, George L. of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Richard J. (Linda) of Las Vegas, NV and Michael M. (Cathyann) of Rye, NY. Also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Family members who died earlier include his beloved wife Alice in 1989, his son William J. III in 1974, his sister Margaret in 1984 and his brother John E. (Jeddy) in 1944. Family will receive friends from 4-8 pm on Monday, February 9, 2004 at the Graham Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is 10 am on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 at the Church of the Resurrection, Rye, NY.
