Mildred I. Bassett
MILDRED I. BASSETT, 93, of Lambert Lind Highway, a long-time volunteer, died Monday at her home.
She was the widow of Francis E. Bassett. Born in Warwick, a daughter of the late Jesse and Annie E. (DeLong) Clark, she was a lifelong city resident.
Active for more than 25 years in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, she was honored in 1985 by then Mayor Francis X. Flaherty for her volunteer services, with his declaration of April 30, 1985, as Mildred I. Bassett Day. She was further honored, with a group of seniors, for volunteerism by President Ronald Reagan in the Rose Garden of the White House. She was a member of the Hillsgrove United Methodist Church for many years.
She leaves two daughters, Dorothy E. Burkhardt of Martinez, Ga., and Barbara A. Koehler of Warwick; a foster daughter, Betty VanEck of Warwick; 28 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was mother of the late George E. Bloomingburgh and Priscilla M. Titus, stepmother of the late Charles W. Bassett and Marion I. Sprague, and sister of the late Isabel Halliday.
The funeral will be held Friday at 8 a.m. from The Urquhart-Murphy Funeral Home, 800 Greenwich Ave., Route 5, followed by a service at 9 in Hillsgrove United Methodist Church, 35 Kilvert St. Burial will be in the Brayton Cemetery.
