Miss Byrd Weds C.G. Bassett, Jr. In Andrews
ANDREWS, June 1. Special: The marriage of Miss Bernice Alice Byrd, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Frank Byrd, of Andrews, to Mr. Cleveland Gregory Bassett, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Bassett, of Ridgefield, Conn., took place at 4 o?clock this afternoon in St. Luke?s Protestant Episcopal church here.
The Rev. deSaussure Parker Moore, rector, preformed the double ring ceremony, assisted by the Rev. P.H. Bussey, of Florence, former pastor of Andrews Baptist church. Mrs. Richard W. Eutsler, organist, played the wedding music.
Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a gown of white Duchess satin made with yoke of starched chiffon embroidered in a diamond design with Ceylon beads, and a puffed peplum over a gathered skirt. Her short veil of illusion fell from a pillbox hat of white satin, embroidered in the same design as the yoke of her dress. She carried a white prayer book, showered with lilies of the valley and narrow white ribbons.
Miss Dorothy Byrd, of Charleston, sister of the bride and maid of honor, wore pale pink volle and a leghorn picture hat. She carried a crescent bouquet of deep purple gladioli.
Mr. Bassett, father of the bridegroom, was his son?s best man. Serving as ushers were Mr. Francis Bassett, of Ridgefield, brother of the bridegroom, and Mr. Richard S. Byrd, of Columbia, brother of the bride.
A reception was held at the home of the bride?s parents after the ceremony with Mrs. Montgomery Watson of White Plains, N.Y., and Miss Mary Evelyn Frye, of Andrews, assisting.
After a wedding trip the couple will reside in Cambridge, Mass., where Mr. Bassett will complete work toward his master?s degree in city planning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mrs. Bassett wore for traveling a two-piece dress of navy blue silk with hat of white straw trimmed with shite lilacs and blue and white pumps.
Mrs. Bassett was graduated from Andrews high school and from Winthrop college where she received her B.S. degree in home economics in 1944. Since her graduation she has served as dietitian at New Jersey State hospital in Trenton, N.J.
Mr. Bassett received his B.S. degree in architecture from Pennsylvania State college, having returned there after serving two and half years in the army, 18 months overseas. He is a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.
Out-of-town guests for the wedding included Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery Watson, of White Plains; Mr. Alva H. Byrd, Mrs. Neil C. Murphy and Mr. W. Pugh Byrd, of Darlington; Mr. and Mrs. Bassett, of Ridgefield, parents of the bridegroom, and Mrs. Richard S. Byrd, of Columbia.

C. Gregory Bassett ? who served 17 years with the National Capital Planning Commission and was a longtime Ridgefield resident ? died of cancer on Wednesday September 25, at Fairfax Hospital in South Caroline. He was 69 and had lived on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina since his retirement in 1984.
A native of Ridgefield, Mr. Bassett served in the 406th Infantry in Europe during World War II. After the war he completed his bachelor of science degree in architecture at Penn State University.
Mr. Bassett received his masters degree in city and regional planning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The joined the National Capital Planning Commission in 1967 as director of urban renewal and housing and later became director of capital improvement programming.
Before going to Washington, D.C., Mr. Bassett served as director of the community renewal project for Baltimore, and had worked with the Philadelphia Planning Commission during the early redevelopment of the city?s center area.
During his planning career he also taught at several universities, and served as director of the Greater Bridgeport Regional Planning Commission.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Byrd Bassett, two sons, C. Gregory III of Germantown, Maryland, and John L. of Lorton, South Carolina and two daughters, Laura B. Robonson of Nokesville, Virginia, and May B. Cole or Portland, Oregon.
Mr. Bassett is also survived by a brother, Francis Bassett of Bradenton, Florida, a sister Helen Dyke of Franklin, North Carolina, and five grandchildren.

C. Gregory Bassett - Urban Planner
C. Gregory Bassett, 69, an urban planner who was a retired director of capital improvements at the national Capital Planning Commission, died of cancer Sept. 25 at Fairfax Hospital. A former resident of Vienna who lived in Hilton Head, S.C., Mr. Bassett was in the Washington area for medical treatment and to see family members. He worked for the National Capital Planning Commission. He was born in Ridgefield, Conn. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University, where he majored in architecture, and he received a master's degree in city planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served in the Army in World War II and was a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. In the 1950s, Mr. Bassett was an urban planner in Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay area, Illinois and St. Louis. In 1961, he was named director of the Greater Bridgeport (Conn.) Regional Planning Commission. From 1963 to 1967, he developed a community renewal program for the Baltimore Urban Renewal and Housing Authority. Mr. Bassett taught at the University of Michigan, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Illinois and Catholic University. Survivors include his wife, Bernice Bassett, whom he married in 1948, of Hilton Head; four children, Laura Bassett Robinson of Nokesville, Va., C. Gregory Bassett III of Germantown, John Lewis Bassett of Lorton, and Amy Bassett Cole of Portland, Ore.; a brother, Francis Bassett of Bradenton, Fla.; a sister, Helen Dyke of Franklin, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
