LOVELL, Wyo. - Joseph Stewart Bassett, 78, of Lovell, died Saturday, July 23, 2005, at Deaconess Billings Clinic. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 28, at the LDS Stake Center in Lovell. Burial will be at the family ranch in Dryhead. Haskell Funeral Home of Lovell is in charge.
Joseph Stewart Bassett, May 24, 1927 - July 23, 2005 Joseph Stewart Bassett of Lovell, died Saturday July 23, 2005 at Deaconess Hospital in Billings, as a result of complications following an accident on a grader.
He was born in Kane on May 24, 1927 to Russell George Bassett and Lauretta Stewart Bassett. Joe was the youngest of six children. He lost his father at age 9 which left him, two brothrs and three sisters to care and provide for their mother who died in 1977. Joe graduated from Lovell in 1945 and spent two years in the U.S. Army with both his brothers serving their country in World War II, where he lost his brother Clyde.
Joe married Iris Stringham on January 6, 1949, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. When he was first married he worked at the Great Western Sugar factory and also worked on the power line of Dry Head. He delivered fuel for Mr. VandenBoom for several years.
In 1967, he and Iris purchased the Schively Ranch and spent the next 40 years raising six children and working 24/7 to provide for his family. He started a guest ranch which was a successful working cattle ranch located 62 miles from Lovell in Dry Head, Mont. He has been able to share his knowledge and passion with people all over the world. He was surely one of the last of dying breed of men.
Joe served in many capacities in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including a counselor in a bishopric and on the Big Horn Stake High Council. He also served the community of Lovell for many years on the school board.
Joe is survived by his wife, Iris, who resides in Lovell and Dry Head; six children, Rusty of Bear Lake, Idaho, Jennifer Cerroni of Levell, Jodee of Burlington, Matt, Jeff and Jackie Click, all of Lovell; 28 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell George and Lauretta Bassett; two brothers, Clyde and Boyd Bassett, three sisters, Lois Brothers, Enda Abbott and LaVon Luck; and grandson, Jeremy Croft.
Funeral services will be Thursday, July 28, at 10 a.m. at the Lovell LDS Stake Center. Burial will be at the Dry Head Ranch. The procession will leave from the church parking lot around 1 p.m. for the burial.
