Charles Towns Succumbs Here
Funeral Wednesday For Ex-Street Commissioner
Charles Towns, 73, former Shelbyville Street commissioner and lifelong resident of Shelby county, died at the Major hospital at 3:15 p.m. yesterday. He had been ill health for the past one and a half years and a patient at the hospital for two weeks. Mr. Towns was a retired farmer and grain buyer, and made his home at 225 N. Pike St. He had been very active in Republican politics in the county and served as street commissioner during the present city administration until last March, when he resigned because of poor health. Prior to that, he had been assistant street commissioner. He was born in Marion township on July 5, 1877, the son of James and Cynthia (Rhoades) Towns. He was married to Carrie Nading in Marion township in 1897. She preceded him in death in 1930. surviving are seven children, four sons and three daughters. They are Mrs. T. J. Hargadon, El Monte, Calif., Mrs. Chandos Bates and Mrs. Cecil Shadley, both of Shelbyville, and Charles E. of Rushville, Hal M., of Danville, Ill., and Virgil S. and Jack W. Towns of Shelbyville. Other surviving are 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Melle Jones with whom he resided, Mrs. William Coers, Shelby township, and Mrs. Perry Golding and Mrs. A. F Talbert of Shelbyville; and three brothers, Sylvester, of Union township and Rev. Jesse Towns and James Towns, both of Indianapolis. One sister and two grandchildren preceded him death. He was a member of the old Marion Methodist church and the Masonic Lodge of Morristown. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Ewing Mortuary with Rev. N. I. Schoolfield officiating, assisted by Rev. Harry Carter. Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary after 7:00 p.m. Monday.
