Richard Allen Moore of Burlington, Washington died of a heart attack on February 22, 2017. He was 82 years old.
He was born in Mount Vernon, Washington to Edith Welts "Bab" Moore and William C. Moore on May 4, 1934.
After graduating from Mount Vernon High School (where he was an outstanding athlete) in 1952, he attended Oregon State University for one year.
In the fall of 1953, he enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Lewis and did most of his service in Germany until being honorably discharged in 1955.
After earning his B.A. at Western Washington University, he taught school, mostly for the Mount Vernon School District.
After retiring from teaching, he worked in construction all over Skagit Valley until about 2012.
On December 23, 1962, he married Mount Vernon High School physical education teacher, Gloria Bassett. They had three children, Janice, Bill, and Jim.
In 1967, along with his dad and brother, he built the family home out near the Nookachamps River where he and Gloria lived until 2015 when they sold "the farm," in the family since his Great-grandpa Moore bought it in the early 1900's.
If there is one word that summed up Dick Moore, that would be, "fun." His sharp wit livened up ball practice, choir practice, bucking hay in the hot sun, Sunday school, his sixth grade classroom, Baptist youth group, hanging out with the fellas in a local café, family gatherings, and workouts at Urban Fitness. He was, especially, a fun, creative, teacher. From teaching his little girl to read by drawing eyes in the o's of the word "look;" to having his sixth graders make American Indian totem poles or build a small barn or learn metric in the 1970's by placing a sign on west Blackburn Road, reading, "1 Kilometer to Jefferson School;" to drawing a weekly, positive message, cartoon which "Mrs. Van" ran off on the mimeograph machine so he could hand one out to all the kids at Lincoln and Madison elementary schools; his knack for communicating effectively and engagingly showed that he was a natural born teacher.
And on George Washington's birthday, that natural athlete, natural teacher, brother, husband, dad, and friend walked around the last bend in the trail, into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus. He left unexpectedly, but, he did not leave without saying, "Good bye." He left a final cartoon amongst his things: it is just a wide open door and one of the giant-striding legs of the man who just ran through it. Its jubilant caption: "I'm out of here!"
He is survived by: his wife, Gloria, of Burlington; his daughter Janice Moore; his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Nicole Moore of Bellingham; his son Jim Moore of Woodinville; his brother and sister-in-law, Clark and Pat Moore of Nebraska; his sister and brother-in-law, Meredy and Larry Fay of Chehalis; a niece and nephew and cousins of both the Welts and Moore families.
He was preceded in death in 1940 by his older brother, Billy Clark Moore.
Following cremation, there will be a family-only gathering at Mount Vernon Cemetery.
