      John H. Lewis

      John H. Lewis, a well-known and respected retired farmer, was found dead of heart disease in bed at this home at Evans Mills early this morning.
      Mr. Lewis, who was 68 years of age, resided for 56 years in the town of Leray, the past 15 years of this time at Evans Mills. He leaves a wife and the following sons and daughters: George D. And Frank F. Lewis of Mannsville, Rev. F.H. Lewis, of South Hannibal, Oswego county; Mrs. R.J. Gardner of the town of Leray, Mrs. Albert Paul and Miss Jennie A. Lewis of Evans Mills.
      The funeral will be held from the late residence of the deceased on Thursday at 1 p.m.

      Elizabeth Bassett Lewis

      Elizabeth Bassett Lewis, widow of the late John Lewis, aged 78 years, died at the home of Mrs. Reuben Gardner in Leray Thursday. She had been a resident of Leray for over 60 years. Mrs. Lewis was the daughter of Abel and Susan Bassett. Her husband, John Lewis, died about 12 years ago.
      She is survived by one sister, Mrs. William Lewis of Syracuse, and by five children, George D. And Frank F. Lewis, both of Mannsville; Rev. F.H. Lewis of Salisbury Center, Mrs. Reuben Gardner and Mrs. Albert Paul, both of Evans Mills. She also leaves ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
      Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Evans Mills Methodist Episcopal church, from which place her funeral will be held at 3 Sunday afternoon. Rev. Mr. Thomas, the pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the cemetery at Evans Mills.

      Mannsville, Nov. 26 ? Mrs. Fannie Lena Millard Lewis, 88, widow of Rev. Fred H. Lewis, a Methodist minister, died Sunday morning at the Evergreen nursing home, where she had been a patient since September.
      Mrs. Lewis had lived at her home on North Main street until Feb. 10, when she moved to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Joslyn in Ellisburg.
      The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mannsville Methodist church with Rev. Earl Hartley, pastor, and Rev. Kemxeth Combs, pastor of Hannibal Methodist church, officiating. Burial will be in Evans Mills cemetery Rev. Frank Brown, pastor of Gouverneur Methodist chruch, will conduct graveside rites.
      Friends may call at the Piddock fuenral home, Adams, today from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
      Mrs. Lewis is survived by a brother, Will Ernest Millard, a patient at the Mannsville nursing home and nieces, and nephews and cousins.
      She was born two miles west of Mannsville on May 4, 1874, a daughter of John Madison and Emma Amelia Rury Millard. Mrs. Lewis was gradauted from Mannsville High school, later taking summer school work at St. Lawrence university, Canton. She later taught in the standard training school in the Norther New York Methodist conference.
      She was married June 29, 1893, ad her home in this village to the late Rev. Fred H. Lewis, son of John H. and Elizabeth Bassett Lewis, by Rev. Charels E. Beebee, then pastor of Mannsville Methodist church. At the time of their marriage, eh was a teacher. He later served as principal in schools in Pierrepon Manor, Mannsville, Antwerp and Evans Mills. The couple noted their golden anniversary in 1943.
      In 1898, Rev. Mr. Lewis entered the ministry and was with the Northern New York conference, Black River-Ontario district. Occupying pastorates for 36 years, Rev. Mr. Lewis and Mrs. Lewis were in Oxbo, South Hannibal, Ohio City, Dapauville, Salisbury Center, Brookfield, East Hamilton, ?????, Madison, Prospect, Plessis and Redwood.
      Rev. Mr. Lewis retired from the ministry in 1934 and the couple lived in Philadelphia for one year, then moving to Mannsville and purchasing the home on north Main street.
      Both Rev. and Mrs. lewis were active in the management of the Trenton Assembly Park Association of Campers. They owned a camp there for more than 40 years and Rev. Mr. Lewis served as president and treasurer of the association for years.
      After moving to Mannsville, the couple became active in the Mannsville-Methodist Church. Rev. Mr. Lewis died Sep. 12, 1949.
      Mrs. Lewis was the oldest living member of the Mannsville Methodist church, having joined at the age of 12 years. She was active in all departments of the church, a foremr leader of the Campt Fire Girls, the Bluebirds, the Junior Epworth league and for more than 20 yaers taught children?s work at the Trenton Assembly park.
      Until she became ill, Mrs. Lewis served as secretary of literature and publications, promotion secretary of the W.S.C.S., chairman of the commission on membership and evangelims, treasurer of the church school and was persident of the local W.C.T.U.
      She was honored last spring with a fellowship dinner at the Mannsville Methodist church.
