Mr. Bassett was born May 19, 1925, in Milwaukee and grew up in Portland. He graduated from Central Catholic High School. During World War II, he served in the Navy. He was a salesman for Johnson's Wax and for food brokers. He retired as a self-employed painter. In 1951, he married Shirley Ford; they divorced. Survivors include his sons, Matthew, Tony and Joe; daughter, Shawn Karakas and Paula Barsotti; former wife and companion, Shirley; and seven grandchildren. His son Sam died in 1979.
