BASSETT, ELIZABETH F. (nee FITE) "BETSY" 82 of Cape May and Highland Beach, FL, formerly of Devon, PA passed away peacefully at her home in Florida on Friday, February 17, 2012. Betsy was a Mayflower Descendant; born to the late Raymond L. Fite and Elizabeth Townsend Stevens Fite on Jan. 10, 1930 in Ocean City. She graduated from Cape May High School in 1947 and later consecutively attended the George School, Newtown, PA; Edgewood Park College, Tarrytown, NY and Pierce Business College, Phila., PA. After completing her education she worked as an executive secretary at the Sheraton Hilton in Philadelphia and this position eventually led to the introduction of Betsy and her husband of 54 years, Henry. Betsy was a devoted member of her church. Over the years she was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church, Wayne, PA; the Spanish River Presbyterian Church, Boca Raton, FL and the Cold Spring Presbyterian Church, Cape May, NJ. She was an active member of the D.A.R. Betsy worked as a volunteer at Gumbo Limbo Nature Preserve in Boca Raton for over 15 years. She enjoyed playing bridge and gardening but most of all enjoyed being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and being with her family. Along with her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Henry Bassett, III (2008) and her stepson, William A. Bassett (2005). Betsy will be dearly missed by her loving family which includes her three children, Dorothy Sweeny-Rights (and Jeff Rights) of Dallas, TX; Henry (and Susan) Bassett, IV of Atlanta, GA and Wendy (and Chris) Staunton of Richmond, VA; two brothers, Robert Fite of Cape May and Raymond (and Kathy) Fite, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Susan Spear Bassett of Baltimore, MD; seven grandchildren, Christopher, Mark, Graham, Julia, Henry, V ("Quincy"), Christopher ("Kip") and Geoffrey; two great grandchildren, Celia and Linley. Funeral services will be held on Friday (February 24th) at 1:00PM in the Cold Spring Presbyterian Church, 780 Seashore Rd., Lower Township where friends will be received at the time of the service. Interment will follow in the Cold Spring Presbyterian Cemetery.
