ANGOLA ? Winifred B. "Winnie" Bassett, age 100, of Nevada Mills (Angola), Indiana, passed away on Monday, February 9, 2015, at Northern Lakes Nursing Center, Angola, Indiana.
Little 5 pound preemie, Winifred Berneice, was born to Roscoe and Lola (Casebeer) Munger on May 9, 1914, at their home on the millpond bank in Nevada Mills, Indiana. Dad's middle finger and baby's arm the same length, which in no way suggested the life-span to follow, 100 years, 9 months.
The little, one-room school and white church, also on the millpond, provided education and social life. Someone in the church instigated the building of a tennis court for the neighborhood young.
Each high school age teen had to provide his own transportation to Orland High School. Winnie was fortunate to be in every play produced and served as yell leader in all four years of high school.
Three years in Manchester College plus training at Saint Francis College, earned an MS-BS in psychology and education.
Thirty-eight years as Mrs. Clyde Stewart provided the birth of her only daughter, Gloria Elaine Stewart, in 1937. Winnie spent 10 years as a trade show demonstrator with her early husband, Paul Speicher. After retirement from teaching she married Ollie Bassett and moved to Boynton Beach, Florida.
Survivors include a grandson, Scott Snellenberger and wife, Helen, of Angola; great-granddaughters, Roxanne and Jennifer Snellenberger of Angola; great-grandson, Troy Snellenberger of Angola, Indiana; six great-great grandchildren, Dakota Snellenberger, Kaitlyn, Konnor, and Karma Snellenberger, Cole Snellenberger, and Carter Napier; two sisters, Maxine Pardon of Florida, and Iris Thomas of Angola, Indiana; and a brother, Lynn (Doc) Munger of Fremont, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; a daughter, Gloria Elaine Stewart; a grandson, George Snellenberger; her parents; a sister, Rozena Ewers; and a brother, Wendell (Pat) Munger.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 15, 2015, at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Indiana, with the Rev. Duane Stidham and Pastor Craig Johnson officiating. There will be two hours of visitation prior to the services from 1 p.m. until service time at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Lake Gage Cemetery at a later date.
