Bassett, 83, formerly of Northboro and Berlin, Mass., died Wednesday in John Knox Village Medical Center after a long illness. He leaves his wife of 56 years, Grace (Boothby) Bassett; a son, Rev. Joseph A. Bassett of Chestnut Hill, Mass.; a daughter, Jane A. Henderson of Old Mystic, Conn.; a foster son, Donald A. Prescott of Klamath Falls, Ore.; and seven grandchildren. He was born in Hyde Park, Mass., son of Joseph W. and Nellie V. (Ellis) Bassett, and was raised in Harwich Center, Mass. He lived 27 years in Northboro before moving to Berlin in 1964, and then returned to Harwich Center in 1973. He moved to Florida in 1981. He attended Harwich schools and graduated from East Greenwich Academy, East Greenwich, R.I., in 1932. He also completed a course at the New York Institute of Finance. Mr. Bassett was a stockbroker for A.G. Edwards & Sons Inc. in Hyannis for several years, retiring in 1981. Previously, he was a stockbroker for Paine Webber Co.; A.G. Edwards & Sons Inc.; Francis I. duPont & Co.; and Sands, Taylor & Wood in Worcester, Mass. He was a member of both the School Committee and Planning Board in Northboro, and was instrumental in the building of Memorial Field. He was a member of the First Unitarian Congregational Church; the Central Massachusetts Baseball Umpires Association; and St. Bernard's Lodge of Masons in Southboro. He was a former member of the Northboro Boy Scout Troop Committee. He played minor-league baseball as a catcher in the Cape Cod (Mass.) League during the 1930s. He also played in the Blackstone Valley (Mass.) League and formed an American Legion team in Northboro. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Barnstable Unitarian Church, 3330 Main St., Route 6A, East Barnstable, Mass. Burial will be at a later date in Island Pond Cemetery, Harwich. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home, 163 South Volusia Ave., is directing arrangements.
