      Dwight M. Bassett, son of retired Air Force Col. And Mrs. Cecil A. Bassett, of 4304 Marquette Dr., recently completed a U.S. Air Force ROTC field training encampment at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.
      During the encampment, he received survival and small arms training and aircraft and aircrew indoctrination. He also had the opportunity to observe careers in which he might wish to serve as an Air Force officer.

      Cecil A. Bassett Jr.

      Col. Cecil A. Bassett Jr., U.S. Air Force retired, passed away at his Bluewater Bay home in Niceville, Fla., on March 17, 2002.

      He was born Aug. 20, 1933, in Bellefonte, Pa. to Cecil A. Bassett Sr. and Iva Marie Bass Bassett. Col. Bassett was a 1951 graduate of Berkshire School, Sheffield, Mass., and Davis and Elkins College, Elkins, W. Va., in 1955 with a bachelor of science in business administration. He earned his master of science in international affairs from the George Washington University, Washington, D.C., and was a 1973 graduate of the National War College, Washington, D.C.

      Col. Bassett was a member of The Order of Daedalians. A 21-year veteran of the Air Force, he proudly served his country in Southeast Asia, where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal.

      Upon military retirement he actively pursued and truly enjoyed a second career in sales representing several industries and clients until illness forced his retirement.

      He is surived by his wife of 47 years, Marilyn Hubbard Bassett; and sons, Mark Wayne Bassett and Dwight Miles Bassett; daughter-in-law, Beccky Dillard Bassett; and grandsons, Scott Ruleman and Dwight Miles Jr. all of the Memphis, Tenn., area. Other survivors include his brother, Col. David H. Bassett and his wife, Nancy, of Escondido, Calif., sister-in-law, Jean H. Harshbarger of Fort Myers, Fla.; and brother-in-law, Miles H. Hubbard and wife Terri of Old Saybrook, Conn.

      A memorial Mass with military honors will be held for the immediate family at 11 a.m. April 6 at Saint Brigid Catholic Church, Memphis.

      In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Covenant Hospice of Northwest Florida, 101 Hart St., Niceville, FL 32578; or to a charity of choice.
