Laura Smith Helms Bassett
Laura (Jeri) Smith Helms Bassett, 91, passed into Heaven Wednesday, November 6, 2024. She was born in Cleveland County on March 14, 1933 to the late Lester and Selva Smith.
Laura grew up on a farm before attending King's College and becoming a medical transcriptionist for over 20 years. She was a great athlete and participated in the Charlotte Youth Athletic Club and the VFW Auxillary. She loved to dance and attend races at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husbands, Ernie L. Helms and Robert Bassett, siblings Grace Elliott, Hilda Crotts, Ann Tottle, Joe Smith and Don Smith.
Survivors include her son, Ernie Lee Helms (Diane Wallace) and daughter, Gina Helms Stephens (Jimmy Stephens), step-children, Carl Bassett, Deborah Bassett, Marin Visentin (Thomas), Robin Slattery (Michael) & Robert Bassett (Tammy). She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Laura was dedicated to her family and loved having all to her home at Christmas. She loved church and the Lord and be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, November 15, 2024 at 2 Pm with a visitation from 1 pm to 2 pm at University City United Methodist Church, 3835 W. WT Harris Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28269.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to be sent to VIA Hospice, 7845 Little Ave., Charlotte, NC, 28226.
