Sonya L. Schuler passed away peacefully at her home in Washoe Valley on Saturday, January 16, 2016, after a long battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her husband David Schuler in November 2011.
Sonya was born on May 22, 1940 in Lake County, California. She grew up in Covelo, California enjoying ranch life, raising and training horses.
Sonya and her husband Dave moved to Reno in 1966, where they owned and operated a saddle shop. In 1980, they purchased the Hitchin' Post western store in Carson City, and operated it until their retirement in 2006.
Sonya had a lifelong love of horses and competed in a variety of equine events, from barrel racing to cutting and reined cow horse competitions. In addition to being a horsewoman, she was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing with Dave at Lake Tahoe.
Sonya had a great sense of humor and her smile and laugh will be missed.
She is survived by her son Pete Schuler, her brother, Jack Bassett (Judy) and by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held at noon on Sunday, March 20, 2015 at the Carson City Elk's Lodge, 515 N. Nevada Street, Carson City. In lieu of flowers you may make donations to Eden Hospice, 570 South Maine, Fallon, NV 89406.
