Elaine A. Smith
Elaine A. Smith, born August 21, 1919, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2005 at the age of 86.
She was one of five children born to Bruce and Ella Henderson in Covelo, (Mendocino County) California. Elaine and her family moved to Reno, Nevada in 1968. Elaine truly loved Nevada the mountains, the desert, but most of all, the people. She was proud to be a Nevadan.
Elaine and her family owned and operated the D bar M Western Store in Reno and the Hitchin' Post Western Store in Carson City. Elaine retired from the businesses in the late 1980's to become more active in her ranching business, and her family still continues to operate both stores to this day. Elaine was active in raising Quarter Horses at the Ranch in Washoe Valley, Nevada. Looking around the ranch, you could easily see evidence of Elaine's green thumb. Beautiful pastures, flowers, and an abundant garden were guaranteed to flourish under her watchful eye. As an accomplished horsewoman, Elaine was proud of her awardwinning Quarter Horses and always treasured their many trophies and awards.
Elaine was a member of the Nevada Reined Cow and Cutting Horse Association, the American Quarter Horse Association and of the Order of the Eastern Star, Augusta Chapter, Covelo.
Elaine is survived by her daughter Sonya Schuler (Dave), her son Jack Bassett (Judy), numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a large extended family. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
