Lived In Jonesboro 80 Years
Mrs. Nancy McKeever Passed Away At Her Home In Jonesboro Wednesday
To Be Buried Saturday
Death of Pioneer Woman Mourned By Nearly Everyone ? Sick But A Few Days
Mrs. Nancy McKeever, one of the pioneer residents of Jonesboro; and one of the best known and loved women of the community, passed away at her home on Water street Wednesday evening at ten minutes after five o?clock, after an illness of only a few days. Mrs. McKeever had been in feeble health for a long time, and the past winter had suffered an attack of pneumonia. From this she had recovered, but it left her weak, and when taken ill a few days ago with stomach trouble, she succumbed.
Mrs. McKeever was born in Virginia, July 7, 1930, being 85 years old last July. She was the daughter of Gabriel and Nancy Johnson. When the deceased was four years old the family moved to Jonesboro, where Mrs. McKeever has lived ever since. She was the last of a family of four sisters and three brothers.
She was married Sept. 4, 1855, to John McKeever. To them were born four sons and two daughters. Of these two sons and two daughters remain, John and Clarence McKeever, of Jonesboro, Mrs. Mattie Godling, of Marion; and Mrs. Nellie Miller, of Auburn, Ind. There are six grandchildren; Mrs. Verl Hayner of Marion; May Miller, of Chicago Junction, Ohio; Carlene Miller, of Delphos, Ohio; Lester Miller, of near Delphos, Ohio; Bert McKeever, of Milwaukee, Wis.; and Dr. Otto McKeever, of Marion. The great-grandchildren are: Donald, Harold, Ruth Hilda, Fern, Corlis, James, Harry, Joseph and Gordon McKeever, and John Hayner.
Mrs. McKeever was known to everyone in this vicinity as Grandma McKeever. She was a small woman, who was cheerful and kindly to everyone, and was universally loved. Her son, Clarence McKeever, and family, lived with her in the old family home on Water street, and during her recent illness her daughter, Mrs. Golding, of Marion, has been here to care for her.
Mrs. McKeever?s husband died about twenty-five years ago. He was also a pioneer of this vicinity, and was influential and active in building up Jonesboro in tis earlier years.
Mrs. McKeever was a member of the Methodist Protestant church for many years. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two o?clock, at the M.P. church, with Rev. G.L. Farrow in charge, assisted by Rev. Weaver, of the M.E. church.
A host of warm personal friends mourn the departure of a lovely character, and Jonesboro loses one of her pioneer residents, as the deceased had lived here all her life, since the was four years old. She lived here over eighty years.
