Benjamin Bassett
RUTLAND TOWN - Mr. Benjamin O. Bassett Sr., 74, died Sunday evening, May 23, 2010, at The Pines at Rutland, following a brief illness with cancer.
He was born July 13, 1935, in Proctor, the son of the late Benjamin and Eleanor (Gleason) Bassett.
Mr. Bassett was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in active duty during the Korean conflict.
He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Local #1122 and the American Legion Post #31. He was an avid hunter, boater and fisherman. This past year, he enjoyed playing Wii with his grandchildren.
Ben worked at Howe Richardson Scale Co. until its closing and retired from District 3 State Highway Department following many years of service.
He is survived by his companion of 35 years, Martha Allen, and her children, Scott Allen and Suellen Allen of Rutland and Jason and Becky Allen and their children, Tyler, Daniel and Laura, of Pittsford. He is also survived by his children, Laurie Forrest, Joseph Bassett and Benjamin Bassett, all of Rutland, Patricia Bassett of Brandon and Victoria Pelkey of Wisconsin; brothers, Richard Bassett and his wife Laverna of Brandon, Stewart and his wife Peggy of Florida and Clifford of Chittenden; 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother, Francis Bassett.
Ben was known as PaPa to his grandchildren, Ricky Pelland, Tyler and Daniel Allen, and they were his best buddies for fishing and many smelt were caught.
Trista Pelland helped PaPa to get his new boat ready and PaPa enjoyed only a few trips out.
PaPa looked forward to every weekend during his illness for his best of buddy rides and ice cream cones while touring around the lake and fishing spots with Jason Allen. PaPa's great-grandson, Chris Webster, came every day after school to hang out in the yard with PaPa. He will be deeply missed by all.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Pittsford.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
