      Charles J. Smith

Charles J. Smith, 80, a Clear Lake area resident, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 27, 2009, after a fierce battle with cancer.

He was born on January 14, 1929, the son of Charles and Clara Belle (Jeffery) Smith in Jackson, Michigan. He was their fifth child and their first son.

Charles was united in marriage to Ellenor Basset on October 13, 1951 and together they were blessed with three children, David, Mark and Debbie.

Charles served in the U.S. Army for 3 years, one in Korea, and he was a lifetime member of the VFW. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Legion and the Eagles in Sedro- Woolley.

Charlie worked most of his life as a machinist, prompting a move to the Pacific Northwest to work for Boeing. After leaving Boeing, Charlie spent his remaining career with Sunstrand. He retired in 1991, shortly after the death of his wife, Ellenor.

In 1992 Charles moved to Clear Lake, WA where he and his new partner in life, Peggy, built their new home. During his retirement, he and Peggy traveled all over the United States and Canada, to the island of Grenada, and made several trips to Mexico. They shared a love of the open road, a joy for meeting new people, exploring, and having fun.

Charles is survived by his life partner, Margaret Miracle Austin (Peggy). His sons, David Smith of Mukilteo, WA and Mark Smith and his wife Deborah of Maple Falls, WA. His daughter, Debbie Holmes and her husband Steve of Everett, WA. A step-son, Melvin Austin and his wife Terry of Graham, WA. Three grandchildren, Jennifer, Heather and Kelsey and two step-grandchildren, Sean and Kristen. His sisters, Dorothy Fowler, Ruth Cash and Clara English in Michigan and Rosemary Calhoun in Florida as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, and his faithful four-legged buddy, Newfie.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ellenor; two sisters, Gertrude and Margaret and his brother, Richard Smith.

The family would like to thank Dr. Bruce Mathey and his wonderful gang of angels at United General Hospital Oncology for their care and compassion over the past year. In lieu of flowers, donations to the North Puget Cancer Center at United General Hospital would be greatly appreciated.

Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at Holyrood Catholic Cemetery in Shoreline, WA. Visitation is available on Monday, March 30th from 9 am to 5 pm at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley.

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be so he put His arms around you and whispered, "Come to Me". With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you pass away and although we loved you dearly we could not make you stay. A Golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best.
