Harry M. Bassett, 71, Town Clerk, Died at Home Here on Tuesday
Harry M. Bassett, 71, one of Whitesville most respected resident, died at his home here Tuesday evening following a serious illness of about 10 days. Although Mr. Bassett had been in failing health for the past year, he had not been confined until last week.
He was a merchant in Whitesville for many years, duing which time he and his brother, Guy Bassett, now of Rochester, operated the Bassett Brothers? Hardware Store on the corner of Main Street and Wildman Avenue.
In addition to his duties in the hardware business, Mr. Bassett, for 18 years, 1914 to 1932, served as financial clerk of the Senate of the State of New York, a position which took him to Albany during the sessions of the Senate.
In 1938 he was elected Clerk of the Town of Independence, a position which he held at the time of his death.
Born in the Town of Greenwood, February 15, 1877, he was one of three sons of Frank and Hortense Manning Bassett. The family moved to Whitesville when Mr. Bassett was approximately six years of age, and he has been a resident of this village since that time.
He was married to Essie Perkins Chapman on October 12, 1916, who survives, as does one daughter, Mrs. Rose Griffin, Whitesville, and a brother, Guy Bassett, of Rochester. A second brother preceeded Mr. Bassett in death.
Funeral services will be held form the Methodist Church on Friday afternoon at two o?clock, the Rev. O. Blakely Hill, Wellsville, in charge.
Burial will be in Rural Cemetery, Whitesville, the Wildman Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
