John R. Bassette Sr.
John R. Bassette Sr., 81, entered eternal peace on Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Riverside Convalescent Center, Hampton.
A native of Hampton, Mr. Bassette was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, church school superintendent and member of the senior and men's choirs.
Mr. Bassette is survived by his wife, Janie P. Bassette; two sons, John Jr. of New York and Hugh Edward of Oakland, Calif.; one sister, Alma D. Rollins of Providence, R.I.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, May 11, at First Baptist Church, 229 N. King St., Hampton, with the Rev. Dr. William D. Booth, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home, 251 W. Queen St., Hampton, and two hours prior to the service Thursday at the church. Family and friends will assemble at the residence by 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Following a long illness, John Richard Bassette, writer and singer of songs, passed on November 9th, 2006 in Cleveland.
Born December 28, 1941 in Hampton, Virginia, John had lived in the Northeast Ohio area, including in Akron, since 1973. A pioneer in the independent record business, he inspired a generation of bands, singers and writers to make and market their own music.
He leaves behind a family of friends, fans and admirers. Through them and through his music, he will live on.
Burial has taken place at Riverside Cemetery in Cleveland.
