Enid Thacher Bassett Crook
Enid Thacher Bassett Crook, age 86, of South Dennis passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday November 11, 2022. She was the wife of the late Dr. Robert Crook.
Born in Boston on November 15, 1935, she graduated from Yarmouth High School class of 1953. Enid attended Burdette College and was crowned prom queen her senior year. She was from one of the old Cape families, growing up in South Dennis and enjoyed telling stories about how she and her friends tried to pull up the stakes marking where the new Route 6 was to be laid. She was a direct descendant from the Rogers line from the Mayflower. Enid spent many years with her husband and then her children traveling around the country and living in different states before eventually settling back in her family home on Cape Cod.
Enid was involved with extensive volunteer work in the community and was instrumental in raising funds for the original lights on the Dennis-Yarmouth football field and sending the DY band to the Rose Bowl parade. She was an Executive Administrator's Assistant to the Barnstable County Sheriff, was deputized and was recognized as employee of the year. A fierce football fan, she enjoyed watching the Patriots and Tom Brady. She enjoyed reading, traveling, crossword puzzles and knitting. She was also artistically talented, played piano and spent some time performing in plays at the Harwich Junior Theater.
She was predeceased by her parents, Alden and Emma Bassett, a son Edward Crook as well as her husband of 42 years. She is survived by her daughter, Celine Crook, sons Douglas Crook and Lincoln Crook and stepson Robert Crook as well as her devoted daughters-in-law Tina Crook and Valerie Crook. Affectionately known by her grandchildren as "Banana" - she is also survived by grandsons Douglas Crook Jr and his wife Jennie and Christopher Fones and granddaughters Kayla Bennion and husband Joe, Sydney Crook, Skylar Fones, Abby Crook and Sarah Crook and a great granddaughter Ellie Bailey Crook. She never missed a birthday or event and her grandkids would look forward to receiving a note in her signature banana shaped cards.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Enid's name to St. Judes Hospital. Enid was first and foremost a kind and overly generous angel who always thought of others before herself. She will be laid to rest in the South Dennis Cemetery in a private funeral. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
