Milton Bassett
Milton was born on October 18, 1934 to Rev. Merrill and Esther Bassett in Anderson, Indiana. He joined his older brother Lowell, and eleven years later his brother Paul came into the family. Merrill and Esther pastored churches in Lone Pine, California where Milton started kindergarten, Greeley, Colorado, Carlsbad, New Mexico, and Longmont, Colorado where Milton graduated from high school. During World War II his father Merrill worked at Douglas Aircraft so the family lived in Hermosa Beach and then Manhattan Beach, California. Milton attended Pasadena College and graduated on June 1, 1956. In his junior year there, while sitting alone in his room, he heard God speak and tell him He wanted him to be a minister. Surprised and not sure how he was going to be able to financially return to school the next year, he "put out a fleece." Not long after that he received an invitation from the college inviting him to be part of a traveling quartet raising Living Endowment funds for the college. He was the bass singer in the Ambassador quartet the summer of 1955, and his finances were provided. After graduation he went to Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri and got a job at Nazarene Headquarters where he met Carol Swim who was also working there. Milton and Carol were married November 22, 1957 in Kansas City, and Milton graduated from seminary in 1960. They moved to Washington state in 1960 where he pastored Nazarene churches for 40 years on the Washington Pacific District. His pastorates were Clearview from 1960-1962; West Seattle from 1962-1969; Mt. Vernon from 1969-1983, and Highline in Normandy Park, WA from 1983-2000 when he retired. In 1968 Milton and Carol were blessed with Cheryl who came to them at three days old, and then, in 1969, Randy was born to them. Upon retirement in 2000, Milton and Carol moved to La Mesa, CA to be close to their children and grandchildren. He was Grandpa and Papa to Chelsea, Quinlan, Joshua, Jacob and Amy. Milton is survived by his wife Carol, his two children and daughter-in-law, five grandchildren and brothers Lowell and Paul.
