Rockford, Ill. ? Arthur Bassett, a policeman, was shot and almost instantly killed shortly after midnight last night when four men stopped the automobile in which he was riding with Miss Pearl Johnson, Bassett had gone off duty at 11 p.m. and was driving on South Central avenue when the four men in another car attempted to stop him. He opened fire on them, being still in uniform, and wounded one of the men. He was himself shot through the heart. His assailants escaped in their car.

Rites For Policeman On Sunday
Fellow officers in uniform will bear the body of Patrolman Arthur Bassett, murdered by bandits Thursday night, to its last resting place in the cemetery at Polo, Ill.
An escort of 35 or 40 uniformed policemen will also be provided as a final tribute of the police department to the popular young officer.
The pallbearers, selected this morning, will be Officers Daniel L. Grigsby, Richard Whale, Glenn C. Wilkins, Ray Sowl, Lloyd E. Fry and Ralph Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at 1 pm from the home of the slain officer?s mother, Mrs. Hattie Holley Bassett, 1906 Hancock st. The home will be open Sunday morning to friends who wish to view the body.
Rev. H.M. Bannen, pastor of Trinity Lutheran church, will officiate at the services in the home and at the grave.
