Edwin A. Bassett of Milton, at 84, Herald Employee
Edwin A. Bassett of Milton, a retired employee of the Boston Herald, died Sunday at the Milton Hospital after a brief illness. He was 84.
Born in Revere and raised in Winthrop, he lived in Milton for the past 52 years.
He was a graduate of Winthrop High School.
Mr. Bassett was a linotype operator in the composing room for 48 years, retiring in 1973.
He was a member of the Squantum Yacht Club, the Vestry of the Church of Our Saviour in Militon, vice president of the Weymouth Art Association and Local 13 of the International Typographical Union.
Mr. Bassett is survived by his wife, Phyllis M. (Cooper); two daughters, June M. Osgood of East Falmouth, formerly of Weymouth, and Joyce D. Gadoury of Hampstead, N.H.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held for Mr. Bassett at 10 a.m. Thursday at Church of Our Saviour, 11 Babcock St., Milton.
Arrangements are by Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, Milton.
