Clyde Bassett
VANDALIA – Clyde Bassett, 79, of Vandalia, died Thursday at the Fayette County Hospital.
He was born at Fosterburg, the son of Hector and Laura (Williams) Bassett. In 1945 he married Velma Earl at Greenville and she survives.
Other survivors include a son, Merle Bassett, of East Alton, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was a retired special investigator for the Illinois Attorney General’s office and a member of the First Baptist Church of Vandalia, Temperance Lodge No. 16 A.F. & A.M., Old National Trail Shrine Club, Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Southern Illinois Order of Juter No. 87, a 50-year member of the Masons and AInad Temple of East St. Louis, Vanalia Moose Lodge 1447 and served as president of the Fayette County Fair.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Hohlt Funeral Home in Vandalia with Dr. Archie Brown and Rev. Charley Westbrook officiating. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Park at Godfrey.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Masonic rites will be said tonight at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Crippled Children’s Hospital of St. Louis or to the First Baptist Church of Vandalia.
