Bassett, Audrey Llewellyn 5/18/1932 - 9/19/2018 Shelby Township Audrey Ruth Llewellyn Bassett, loving mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at her most recent residence in Shelby Township, Michigan on Wednesday, September 19, 2018. She was a former longtime resident of Saginaw and Frankenmuth, Michigan. Audrey was born in Saginaw on May 18, 1932, the only child of Lewis and Emily (Buehler) Llewellyn. She graduated Arthur Hill High School in 1950 and Michigan State College, with a B.A. in Journalism, in 1954. Audrey was a reporter with the Saginaw News from 1954 to 1957, where she met her husband of 21 years, Thomas Bassett, a news photographer. After marriage in 1956 and the arrival of three children from 1957 through 1959, Audrey worked at home and as a preschool teacher while continuing her education part time at Saginaw Valley State College (earning a second B.A. in Elementary Education) and Central Michigan University (earning her M.A. in Early Childhood Education). Audrey worked for several years teaching preschool before returning to her background in communications with positions at Saginaw County Child Development Center, Flint Community Schools, and Hurley Medical Center. Following her retirement, she worked part time for many years at the Wickson Memorial Library in Frankenmuth. Over the course of her life, Audrey volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, political activist for progressive causes, longtime supporter of the ACLU, reading tutor at List Elementary, member of the altar guild at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Bridgeport, and at various community outreach efforts with the Unitarian Universalist Church of Flint. Audrey was also dedicated to the volunteer corps that works ceaselessly to eradicate wayward apostrophes everywhere. Favorite hobbies included reading, crossword puzzles, sewing and knitting, gardening, birdwatching, and travel. Audrey enjoyed many trips with Elderhostel to the British Isles. Surviving are her children: Anne Forgrave, John Bassett, and Amy (Matthew) Gabriel; and grandchildren: William, John, and Emily Forgrave, Jennifer (Harrison) Burnham, and Nicholas (Colleen) and Erin Gabriel. Audrey was predeceased by her parents and by her son-in-law, Robert Forgrave. The family will receive visitors at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Midland, 6220 Jefferson Avenue, on Saturday, September 29th, from 11:30 until noon. A memorial service will follow at the U.U. Fellowship from noon until 1:00 p.m. Private interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Saginaw.
