John C. Bassett
Services for John C. Bassett, 69, of Knoxville, who passed away July 9, 1991 at Iowa Methodist Hospital as a result of Leukemia, were held July 12 at Bybee and Davis Funeral Home.
Interment was in Breckenridge Cemetery, with military rites provided by the Bussey V.F.W. Post. Rev. Neil Montz officiated at the services. Music was provided by organist James Kidder and singers Donna Kingrey and Terri Lynn Rankin. Pallbearers were Tony Bassett, Craig Bassett, David Bassett, James H. Edwards, Kevin King and Mike Kingrey.
Mr. Bassett was born on Feb. 17, 1922 in Marion County, the son of George and Mary Elrita Loynachan Bassett.
He has spent his entire life in the Knoxville community except for the time spent in the Navy during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater and received an honorable discharge in 1945. He was a graduate of Knoxville High School in the class of 1940.
Prior to his discharge from the Navy he was united in marriage to Betty Larson in Waterloo.
John was a semi-truck driver most of his working life, retiring in 1983. Following retirement he drove the Marion County Senior Citizens Bus for seven years.
John and Betty were blessed with a large family consisting of four daughters and three sons. He made friends everywhere he went and he will be truely missed by all. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bussey.
Preceding him in death were his parents. Left to mourn his passing are his wife Betty, his four daughters, Marlene Alcorn and Delores Cowman and husband Gary of Knoxville, Debra Montz and her husband the Rev. Neil Montz of Laura, Linda Spath and her husband Larry of Eau Claire, Wis; three sons, Bob Bassett and wife Dale of Bussey, Jim Bassett and wife Betty of Knoxville, and John Bassett and wife Bobbi of Attica; eight grandsons; ten granddaughters and seven great-grandchildren
Also surviving are four brothers, Marvin Bassett; of Knoxville, Kenneth Bassett of Winterset, Harold Bassett of Hannibal, Mo. and Alvin Bassett of Des Moines; two sisters, Ruth Edwards of rural Chariton and Mary King of Des Moines.
