Alton John Bassett
Recitation of the rosary for Alton John Bassett, a retired Portland attorney and former member of the Portland Boxing Commission, will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in St. Agatha Catholic Church, where funeral Mass will follow at 9:30 a.m. Monday. Mr. Bassett died Wednesday in a Portland-area care center. He was 81.
Born in Rainer,, Mr. Bassett was a graduate of Milwaukie High School, where he played varsity basketball and football. After attending Mount Angel College he graduated from the University of Oregon and the UO Law School and began his law practice in Portland in 1929.
In the late 1930s he served as executive secretary of the state’s Capitol Construction Commission. He was a Portland Boxing Commission member from 1953 to 1958 and had been legal representative of the old Portland Beaver Baseball Club. He retired in 1985.
He was a member of the Oregon State Bar and the Multnomah County Bar Association and was a 50-year member of St. Agatha Parish.
Mr. Bassett is survived by two sons, John of Milwaukie and William of Beaverton; a daughter, Dorothy Daniels of Portland; his mother, Amelia Bassett of Milwaukie; a brother, John A. of Portland; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Gethsemani Cemetery. The family suggests remembrances be contributions to the St. Agatha Parish memorial fund.

Mass of Christian Burial Monday, 9:30 am at St. Agatha Church, SE 15th Nehalem. Rosary Sunday, 4:30 pm at church. Interment Gethsemani cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. Agatha Parish Memorial fund preferred. Hennesseey, Goetsch & McGee directors.
