      Veteran, firefighter
      Ralph E. Bassett Sr., 76, of 807 Route 28, Pembroke, died Monday, December 16, 2002, at his home after a period of failing health.
      Born in Dover on November 27, 1926, the son of George and Sarah (Oates) Bassett, he attended St. Mary's School and was a 40-year resident of Lee prior to moving to Pembroke over four years ago.
      He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and received the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal with two stars and the Phillipine Liberation Medal.
      He was a member of the Dover Post No. 8 American Legion and the Loyal Order of Moose No. 443 of Dover.
      He was a former employee of the United Tanners of Dover, the Great Bay Disposal of Rochester, owned his own painting business for a time, had worked at the Davidson Rubber Co. and then worked for the Town of Durham Public Works Department for 20 years until his retirement. He had also been a volunteer firefighter for the City of Dover.
      He loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting pool, bowling and his hand-held card game.
      He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Annie (Gregoire) Bassett of Pembroke; four sons, Ralph "Sonny" Bassett Jr. and his wife, Cindy of Brookfield; Kenneth Bassett Sr. and his wife, Diane of Middleton; Dennis Bassett of Pembroke and Maurice Bassett of Pittsfield, two daughters, Marie Jones and her husband, Robert of Rochester, and Elaine Snow and her husband, Andrew of Pembroke; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchldren; nine step-great-grandchildren; three more great-grandchildren on the way; a brother, Herbert Bassett of South Berwick, ME; five sisters, Louise Gobbi of Portsmouth, Doris Bassett and Shirley Davis, both of Dover, Roberta Robbie of Barrington and Barbara Durant of California; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
      Three brothers, Gordon, Harold and Walter Bassett, and a granddaughter, Stephanie Bassett, predeceased him.
      A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary Church, Dover, with the Reverend Fritz Cerullo, O.S.A. pastor as celebrant. Burial was in Lee Hill Cemetery, Lee.
