William E. Bassett Jr.
RUTLAND - William E. Bassett Jr., 63, of 184 Maple Ave. died yesterday in his home after an illness. He leaves his wife of 42 years, Diane (Greenleaf) Bassett; a son, Rickey D. Bassett of Rutland; a brother, Robert Bassett of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Colleen Parlin of Winthrop, Maine, and Norma McKenny of Madison, Maine; three grandchildren; newphews and nieces. He was born in Madison, Maine, son of Elwwod and Lucille (Pierpoint) Bassett, and lived here 29 years. He graduated from Madison High School in Maine. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Bassett was a fire-safety officer and former longtime teacher at the Devereux School, where he worked for 32 years. He retired in 1992. He was a former member of the Rutland Lions Club.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in First Congregational Church, 264 Main St. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Rural Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Devereux Rutland Cemetery, Devereux Foundation, 2 Miles Road, Rutland, 01543. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden, is directing arrangements.
